Kiss has been known as much for their bizarre campy theatrics as for their music and some might argue more so. The band became a favorite of American teens during the 1970s, who latched onto their remarkable style of dress, wild hair and lavish face paint. Kiss broke any rules of conformity and opted for flamboyant costumes, wild makeup and riveting performances that did not skimp on the dry ice, smoke bombs and blood spitting. They could easily pack a stadium with legions of devoted followers, many of whom were exhibiting their own wild fashion styles.
Kiss released their self-titled debut album in February 1974 and it subsequently peaked at number 87 on the U.S. charts. Only a year later the band had released three more albums and spent much of their time on the tour bus, promoting their musical endeavors to all who would listen. The album that really propelled them into superstar status was the one that was cultivated from those live shows. Alive! climbed to the Top Ten on the music charts and spawned the hot single “Rock N' Roll All Nite,” which reached number 12.
Kiss followed the success of Alive! with Destroyer, which became the first of their albums to reach the coveted platinum status and featured their first Top Ten single “Beth.” Their popularity was staggering, Kiss mania was sweeping the nation, along with Kiss-driven merchandise that included comic books, makeup, masks, board games and even dolls. The band took to always appearing in public with their masks, crating even more of a sensation among their growing following of fans. Their fan club had reached extraordinary heights by this time and looked to still be attracting fans from around the world.
All of the hype seemed to fade at the onset of the 1980s. Their resulting albums couldn't seem to find a presence on the charts, with Creatures of the Night and music From the Elder failing to make much of an impact. Luckily they found a bit of resurgence with Lick It Up and Animalize and the band seemed to back to their old, weird ways. They spent the rest of the decade churning out successful albums, but once again saw their popularity decline with the onset of the next decade. Still, the group manages to create a stir whenever they announce an upcoming tour and all of the resulting merchandise that comes with it.
