About the play

Moises Kaufman is the writer and director of the play 33 Variations. There are eight actors in the play, including Jane Fonda, who plays the role of Katherine Brandt, a musicologist suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease. Story line of the play The play depicts the life of people in two different centuries, Katherine Brandt in the 21st century and Beethoven in the 19th century. Katherine Brandt is so impressed with the compositions of Beethoven that she wants to unravel the mysteries of his work. She decides to go to Germany to do research on the Beethoven Variations. On one side, the play depicts the life of Beethoven, and, on the other hand, it shows the difficult relationship between Katherine Brandt and her daughter, Clara. While Katherine tries to unravel the pieces of Beethoven's life, she also gains insight on how to mend her relationships and make life beautiful.
