Five of the best: Liverpool in 2010

Posted on December 22, 2009 - Filed Under Arts and Entertainment

Given that Liverpool is only the UKs eighth largest city, it certainly seems to punch well above its weight on a global level. Indeed, Liverpool is a city synonymous with Beatles and Football, with the Fab Four probably the most successful and celebrated bands of all time, and Liverpool FC among the most decorated football clubs on the planet.

However, Liverpools appeal extends well beyond a nostalgia for 60s pop music and a football fixation. In 2008, the city was the European Capital of Culture, which is no mean feat when you consider the wealth of fantastic cities across the continent such as Rome, Paris, London, Berlinthe list goes on.

Liverpool isnt a city to rest on its laurels and if 2009 was a year of consolidating its new found position among Europes city elite, 2010 is all about onwards and upwards and there are likely to some new and familiar faces in the top attractions list in the coming twelve months.

For art lovers, the Tate Liverpool gallery will host a major exhibition that brings together more than 150 works by Picasso. Entitled Picasso: Peace and freedom, the exhibition will run from the 21st of May until the 30 August 2010 and is sure to be a hit, shedding new light into the geniuss life as an artist, political activist and his lifelong campaign for world peace.

From 17 December 2009 until 21 February 2010, the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) is hosting an exhibition called Space Invaders: Art in the Computer Game Environment, which seeks to explore the increasingly blurred boundaries between the real physical world and that of videogames. Whilst the Tates Picasso exhibition will titillate high-art aficionados, the FACT display will be popular chiefly because it tackles such a contemporary subject matter and, importantly, its free to enter.

Moving away from the arts, sport will continue to be an extremely popular spectacle in Liverpool in 2010. The Grand National is an institution and Aintree Racecourse will host the 163rd race on Saturday April 10, and for those dubious about whether theyd enjoy a day at the races, the Grand National is a unique race and everyone in attendance will be in fine spirits and dressed to the hilt for the occasion.

Similarly, Liverpool will continue to be a hotspot for football lovers too, with the Anfield tour and museum taking visitors behind the scenes of one of the worlds greatest clubs. The Beatles Story in Liverpools Albert Dock area is a perennial favourite with tourists and 2010 will be no different. So next year will be a busy one in Merseyside and hotels in Liverpool will be as busy as ever.
