Posted on January 31, 2010 - Filed Under Entertainment
Memphis is the story of a DJ, Huey Calhoun (played by Chad Kimball) who was one of the first white American DJs living in Memphis during the 1950s. He takes an interest in African American music and helps popularize it through his radio station. The tumultuous happenings in the world of music during that period, including the birth of rock 'n' roll, also play a part in the show. The scenario is beautifully interwoven with the story of the personal life of the protagonist, which transcends the barriers of racism. Calhoun's romantic interest, Felicia Farrell (played by Montego Glover), is a beautiful black singer. Their love story develops with dramatic consequences in the setting of a society learning to accept huge changes in its way of thinking.
Memphis had premiered in Beverly Massachusetts in 2003. Subsequently, it concluded successful runs in Mountain View, California (2004), San Diego, California (2008), Seattle, Washington (2009) and has been running successfully on Broadway since the fall of 2009.
The Broadway edition, apart from the original lead pair, also has Derrick Basin as Gator, J. Bernard Calloway as Delray Jones, James Monroe Iglehart as Bobby, Michael McGrath as Mr. Simmons and Cass Morgann as Gladys Calhoun. It is directed by Christopher Ashley, who has to his credit shows such as Xanadu, All Shook Up, The Rocky Horror Show (Tony Award nominated), Sweeny And Todd, and Merrily We Roll Along, among many others.
Choreographed by Sergio Trujillo (of Jersey Boys fame), Memphis also boasts of scenic designer David Gallo (Xanadu, A Catered Affair, Gem of the Ocean) and Costume Designer Paul Tazewell, best known for Broadway productions such as “Guys n Dolls” and Tony Award nominated “In the Heights”. The lighting designer for the show is Howell Binkley, whose Broadway works include “West Side Story”, “Guys and Dolls” and Tony Awards nominated “In the Heights”.
The highlight of the show is its original music score, which is not adapted from any movie, television serial or music album. David Bryan, songwriter, keyboard player and founding member of Bon Jovi, has contributed to the music of Memphis. One song from the musical, “Memphis Lives in me”, features on the Bon Jovi box set. Joe DiPietro has also contributed book and lyrics to the show.
Apart from being a musical extravaganza, the show promises wholesome entertainment for the family. It is ideal for a romantic evening out enjoying the old fashioned charm of the 1950's.
