Just about everybody is familiar with the opening lines of Shakespeares oeSonnet 18, which read, oeShall I compare thee to a summers day? / Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Pretty romantic stuff. Until you read the next 14 lines. Shakespeare goes on to describe the fleetingness of natural beauty in comparison to the subject of the poem, yadda yadda yadda, and ultimately decides that death could never claim his beloved oeWhen in eternal lines to time thou growst. Whaa?! Lines of what, exactly? Well, considering that this is poetry, its pretty safe to assume that the oeeternal lines to time in which the subject growst are referring to the lines of Shakespeares own poem. Roughly translated: oedeath cant touch you so long as youre in my poem, Sweetcheeks. Or something to that effect. In other words, theres nothing inherently wonderful or eternal about the beloved of this poem (whom weve learned absolutely nothing about, by the way); its merely the fact that (s)he happens to be in the poem that gives Shakespeares beloved any greatness.

Appreciation Of Poetry

A lot of students are expected to write a literary essay based on appreciation of poetry. To make the task enjoyable we need to define poetry. What is poetry? Edmund Clarence Stedman said the following: “Poetry is rhythmical, imaginative language expressing the invention, taste, thought, passion, and insight of the human soul.”
Poetry is the creativity of a person’s imagination. Like any other literary work, it needs to be understood to be appreciated. The writer writes for a reason. His purpose may be to evoke emotion, inform, define, represent something of the world or life, entertain … Whatever the case, a poem is unique to its writer. And each poem can be analysed to be appreciated. Here are some general ideas to help you understand the poem you are reading:

In the supreme culture of the East, a tradition, where poetry and spirituality have no distinct boundaries, multitudes of metaphors, feelings and passions are gathered to convey the heart and the mind of the sage, and the wise man to the masses.
The poet writing through the intensity of his mood, often speaks of the weeping of man and the agony of his spirit, trapped in the conditions of the transitory life, playing the voice and the dream in unison. The beauty of a bride, who sweeps her hands through her bed, looking for the petals fallen from the crown of her Prince, lies in this portrait of the soul looking for God.

“Mom, you won’t believe how cheap this outfit was!” I declare as I wave the Bell’s Outlet bag like a victory banner.
My mother cringes, “Inexpensive, not cheap, please.”
When writing anything, word choice is a key component. Because of its compact nature, it is even more so with poetry. How the word sounds in relation to the words around it, the point you are trying to make to your reader, and the use of imagery are a few of the reasons why this is so. You can use both denotation and connotation to help you make affective word choices.

The Platform
And there on the platform, in the faint afternoon
my pulse throbs in the warm sun; I know why I am a poet
of the time of Robert Bly, and Hall;
in this impatient city, Huancayo, I look for quant places
with other tepid things…
I’m no longer a dreamer, nor wish to deceive,
but only to be average and myself—and see, I mean
really, really, really see—see beyond my knees.
The afternoon becomes a faded blue and late—thin.
And the words in my book stop humming in my head.
In less than an hour this mysterious restlessness will descend,
twilight will turn into night, and I will write again, when
I get home, perhaps, or at the platform, tomorrow, perhaps.
I get tired. I get blind. I get lost, but I don’t stop! Never stop!…

When you decide to write poetry you have at least some things to take into account. These things often will get you either praise or criticism, firstly, you write what you want to project to your audience. Secondly you search the universe for the ideas that Our Creator, GOD has for us to help others and ourselves thereby. It’s of the essence to reach the mind, the body, and the senses when writing poetry. Thirdly but not last, you need to remember to touch the emotions deeply, stirring up the seriousness so that the readers will also love poetry as avidly as the novels and educational segments of books.

The love of people must surpass our love of power. We must remember we are all interrelated and interconnected as one. None of us are as strong as all of us. Together we all accomplish more. Divided we fall apart and destroy ourselves.

All the dreams that have come and gone;
All the memories that will live on and on.
High School days we though would last forever;
All the time we thought we’d be together.
Time seemed to slip by and then go away;
Now it’s graduation day.
So many times we laughed and we shared;
So many times we said I love you and I care.
The happiness, the sadness, and the fights galore;
All these things were wrapped into one and more.
Time seemed to slip by and then go away;
Now it’s graduation day.
So many times wondering if we’ll remember what we’ve learned;
The credits, the honors, and the scholarships we’ve earned.
The trips, the sneak days, cutting a class;
For all these years we thought they’d never pass.
Time seemed to slip by, and then go away;
Now it’s graduation day.
Our Actual History

I took my bike during 2007 Rainbow Festival in Malmö, Sweden, to go to an evening of queer poetry with Jan Hammarlund. Jan is the first openly gay artist who was played in Swedish radio in the 70s, that way he himself is a part of our LGBT heritage. The program read: 2000 years of queer poetry round the Mediterranean sea. Sappho, Catullus, Kavafi. In some way I could feel it was interconnected with my own recital, performed the day before - Music from the closet.
